Reassuring news in troubled times. Some great American assets just keep on keepin' on. Classic movie goddess Jane Russell — at age 89 — will be part of the burgeoning cast for Troopathon 2010, an 8-hour live broadcast from the Richard M. Nixon Presidential Library. The event to raise money for care packages sent to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan was organized by Move America Forward — a grass-roots pro-troop group — and will be hosted by talk radio goddess Melanie Morgan and Big Hollywood founder Andrew Breitbart.

Firms work with wind, cars, grids
As an energy producer, wind is fickle: Maybe it'll blow when you need it. Maybe not.
So the race is on to find more efficient ways to store the electricity wind produces when it's blowing, so the lights can stay on when it isn't. A Milwaukee company is smack in the middle of that race - a player in a high-tech sector that local economic strategists hope will become a growth engine for the region. (Read More)

Calfornia should consider renting out the state's assets
In recent days, the reality of the state's budget cutting extravaganza is sinking in for Californians of every situation and location.
State workers are looking at their personal bills and figuring what they can live without to make up for their 15 percent pay cuts and seeing if they can find part-time jobs for those three days a month they will be on furlough. School officials are trying to figure out how they will continue to provide adequate education to their students when they must cut teachers and increase class sizes. College students must determine how they will graduate in time when classes have been cut and fees hiked. (Read More)

Bill Mundell: Australia's fiscal turnaround is a fine model for this state
Special to The Bee
In 1996, Australia reached its high-water mark for public debt, hitting roughly $100 billion. Today, even in the midst of the global economic meltdown, Australia is virtually debt free and has a $100 billion "Fund for the Future." A funny thing happened on the way to this impressive turnaround. Australia realized it had a significant but unexploited potential: Redeploying its public assets. California can today be similarly blessed. California's problem is not an excess of liabilities over assets. Rather, like Australia then, we are not extracting full value for those assets. Recently, the state considered the sale of individual "marquee assets," such as Sutter's Fort and the Los Angeles Coliseum. There is a better way to recapitalize California. (Read More)

GOP protesters, donning SEIU purple, take on Dems, taxes

Two dozen protesters, egged on by the California Republican Party, radio personality Mark Williams and anti-tax crusader Lew Uhler, dressed themselves in purple T-shirts to march on the Capitol and offices of Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and Senate Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg.
Their message: They're fed up with the political clout of the purple-shirt wearing Service Employees International Union members and Democrats who are demanding new taxes to help alleviate California's budget crisis. (Read More)

Gloves are off in CA budget crisis: GOP goes purple, launches tough new ad
Weeks into California's latest budget fiasco, the gloves are off. State Republicans say they've gone on the offensive, launching a new 3 minute ad slamming Dems, and unveiling a new effort targeted at the powerful Service Employees International Union called "Power of the Purple." The goal: to hijack the signature color of the powerful union in an attempt to jab at the Dems' SEIU backing. (Read More)

Why Arnold's May 19 Bailout Is Failing
If the polls are right, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is about to lay the biggest ballot-box egg of his political career, even more disastrous than his 2005 Year of Reform, when he tried but failed to curtail government growth and mend the polarized Legislature by enacting new spending and election laws. Propositions 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D and 1E could all fail Tuesday. Only the mild-mannered Proposition 1F, which would freeze salaries of future legislators if the state was running a deficit, is expected to pass resoundingly. (Read More)

MOVIE REVIEW: 'Brothers at War'
There's a moment near the beginning of Jake Rademacher's new documentary, "Brothers at War," in which he says that all young men grow up trying to impress their fathers. But one gets the sense from his film that Mr. Rademacher is far more worried about impressing his brothers Isaac and Joe — especially his younger brother, Joe — than his father. (Read More)

LOS ANGELES — It's a movie genre you don't hear much about in Hollywood: the right-wing comedy. For that matter, it's not much of a genre at all. But it's exactly what conservative producer-director-screenwriter David Zucker created with "An American Carol." The gag-filled liberal lampoon stars Kevin Farley, brother of the late Chris Farley, as a scruffy Michael Moore clone named Michael Malone, an infamous documentary filmmaker leading a slapstick campaign to abolish the Fourth of July. The Tea Party Express will put its stamp on the 2012 presidential election by hosting a debate next year for Republican candidates with CNN.
The debate, set for Labor Day week, will focus on the economy and government spending -- two issues of great importance to Tea Party Express and other groups in the anti-tax movement. The debate will be held in Tampa, where Republicans will gather in 2012 to formally nominate their standard-bearer to run against President Obama.
"The Tea Party Express is a fascinating, diverse and grass-roots force that already has drastically changed the country's political landscape," Sam Feist, CNN's political director, said in a statement.
Amy Kremer, chairwoman of the Tea Party Express, said the debate "will give presidential candidates an opportunity to focus on the issues near and dear" to Tea Party supporters.
The 2011 political calendar is starting to get filled in with presidential campaign events.
Former first lady Nancy Reagan will host the first GOP debate next spring at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. On June 7, the candidates will gather in New Hampshire for a debate sponsored by CNN, the Union Leader and WMUR-TV.
And on Aug. 13, Republican White House hopefuls can test their organizational strength at the Iowa straw poll.

Democrats Accuse Brown of 'Radical' Ties as Senate Election Nears
GOP Senate candidate Scott Brown and his supporters are firing back at Democratic senators for accusing him of being a "far-right" politician backed by "right-wing radicals" by virtue of his ties to the conservative tea party movement. Brown, with the support of the tea party groups and others, is posing a stiff challenge to Democrat Martha Coakley in the race for the U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts formerly held by the late Ted Kennedy. Polls show him closing in on Coakley, long the frontrunner, with just four days to go until the special election, and the latest survey shows him leading by 4 points. (Read More)

Tea Party Express, Part Three
Washington (CNN) - Just about every blockbuster movie is followed by a sequel, or two. The tea party cross country caravan, it appears, is no different. A Tea Party Express official tells CNN that they're planning a third national tour in late March and early April that will culminate in the nation's capitol on April 15, tax deadline day. Levi Russell, a spokesman for the group, which is organized by the conservative political action committee Our Country Deserves Better, says the slogan for the tour is "just vote them out."
